Have you ever noticed the Finder’s toolbar has some kind of mistake ( i think so ). The finder toolbar has Back/Forward button , View buttons, Quick Look, Action and a search box by default. One interesting thing i am not comfortable with is that why is the Back/Forward button labeled “Back” only . If it was to be labeled “Back” there should have been only Back Button and not the Forward button
. Do you think its some kind of negligence or something which is not much thought of when designed ? .

Well… going “Back” doesn’t mean only going to a DOWN level but to a previous level… Mac OS X is intelligent enough to remember various steps you had done… so mainly, you can go down a level (Back step <- ) and then decide if you want to go another level down (Back step )… so you can move “UP” and “DOWN” on your Back Steps pile
so… sorry to tell you that is not a BUG

by the way… some of the message has been deleted for using special chars…
was saying that you can go BACK in different directions… for example:
I move to folder1, then to folder2, then to folder3… then I click Back ( left arrow ) and go to folder2… but then I can decide to go Back ( left arrow ) to folder1 or Back ( right arrow ) to folder3… as all of them are Back states on the pile.

@Rohman, I totall understant your point . but what i was saying is The label should be Back/Forward right.. when u click left pointing button its Back and when u click Right pointing arrow its forward..
Using
first of all, my name is Rohman, not Duncan.
second… “Back” means previous state, has nothing to do with going Towards or Forward ; ) Apple is not wrong in here.
Using
Corrected the name.. Sorry Rohman,,
. About “Back” Thing i am actually comparing to Windows Explorer where is not written “Back” . So you mean Microsoft is wrong labelling that left arrow Back ?
Using
thanks for correcting the name.
well, for what i see in Windows XP there is written only “Back” in the left Arrow, and nothing on the right Arrow, so i’m my opinion they are wrong on providing information about one button and not in the other… and the truth is that they didn’t write “Forward” on the right Arrow for not confusing users not able to distinguish that “Previous State” aka “Back Button” thing… but in their mind they had the same idea as Mac OS X that we can go back several steps no matter if we are going Back or Forward as they are Previous States ; )

So finally in Summary, Microsoft is Wrong Apple is right according to you. ?
Using
They just do the same thing… just Apple’s labeling is better.
Apple wrote “BACK” under the 2 icons ( because both works for going previous states ) and Windows just wrote “BACK” in the left arrow ( leaving the right arrow without any text )… so… Microsoft is wrong in consistency
Using
Ok just to let yo know about Inconsistency in Mac just see the same left/right arrow buttons what you call “Back” , just see how it is labeled in Safari . Right click on the safari tool bar and select “Customize Toolbar…” and see hows are the arrows Labeled. and tell me who is inconsistent. you may argue now that browser is different thing but No Safari brows Internet , FInder brows Files system.
Using
i never paid attention to safari’s “customize toolbar” view, and yes, i can see there “Back/Forward” written, in that i agree with you, both Safari and Finder should have the same labels… but remember that there are lots of developers coding Mac OS X and Safari… by experience I can say is difficult everybody code in the same way or nobody makes a mistake
and well… i prefer to have a “labeling” error in my OS than security holes ( aka Windows )
Using
hahahaha there you come… OS X is not that great and about Security holes.. in a hacking competition i remember Mac Leopard was hacked in lesser time than it took them to hack Vista. Vista is very much secure now. And now Windows is releasing its own Free Antivirus ( heard in news ) now vista will be more secure.
One reason we hear news that there are lots of security holes in Vista is because 91% of the market is covered by Windows so its little obvious.
but again for hackers as i gave you the example its easier to hack into Mac Leopard than Vista
Using
that is just petty - that is the mutest point ever

I’m a mac user (always have been), but the issue you raise is more than just an inconsistency in labeling. If you have you Toolbar set to display “Icons & Text” or “Icons only”, then you can go navigate both backward and forward in the window history. However if you set the Toolbar to show “Text only” then you only see the word “Back” and there’s no way to navigate forward in the window history. Very annoying.
