Every time i see a movie in my Mac with of course in its default Movie player - QuickTime, I always get irritated with its Seek bar. I have a habit of seeking back the movie to re-watch the favorite scenes in them. To do this i generally move the seek bar cursor to reach to that scene time stamp which i just found good.  Doing this in Windows Media player - Windows default media player is very easy because the Seek bar in Windows media player is wide enough to move the seek cursor to particular time stamp . (More to this Windows media player plays audio video both not like Mac which has two players for Audio and Video i.e., iTunes and QuickTime ). Basically Windows media player’s seek bar extends from very left of the screen to ver right leaving long enough place to seek the movie to desired time stamp.

But in contrast QuickTime in Mac has a very small controller which cant also be resized ( why ???????? ) . The controller fits all controls including seek bar . Moving the time stamp cursor in QuickTime seek bar never reaches to the exact desired time stamp . Because of this i hate to see movies in QuickTime . And even if i see movies in QuickTime i use the fast forward/backward button to reach to the desired time stamp to re-watch my favorite scene . I find this particular  control in QuickTime very frustating . What about you?

Quite right, Quicktime SUCKS! royally. I once tried to watch movies in QuickTime ( on Windows) due to some decoder problems with other players - and cant explain how much pain it was !

I am really really sorry that your Mac is not the same as your Windows box. If you prefer the way Windows works use that instead of the Mac.

Quicktime is nearly 20 years old. When did you start using a computer?

A handy tip: Open Quicktime (or any other application you are about to complain about), select the Help menu and read what it says.

You can stretch the Quicktime player’s window to the width of the screen if you want to - you seem to be talking about the overlaid widget rather than the actual player. You can make MP3 files open in Quicktime rather than iTunes if you want to. Quicktime will open movies, music (mp3 wav AIFF etc.), pictures (TIFF JPEG PNG etc.), pdf files, Flash animations etc. etc.
You can click on the time display to the left of the controls and jump to a specific time or switch it to show the frame count if you prefer.

If you really do not like Quicktime you can make something else the default player - Real Player, VLC etc. Microsoft had a version of their media player for the Mac but it was not as good as Quicktime so they gave up producing it. You now need Flip4Mac to work with WMV files .

Yeah its true…. this is very painful…

@ Duncan , I am using Windows since i touched computer, i am in my mid twenties , but as i have already said - I am using Mac since last 5-6 months now ( refer my archives in this blog ) and this blog is focussed to number of people who are quite new to Mac like me and also to those who are so called Mac Fanboys.
Comments from people like you with such good informartion is helpful to me as well as other readers who are new to Mac ( as this blog is primarily focussed to those ) .So thanks .

I very well know that Quicktime can play .mp3 files ( even split it if you use Quicktime pro - in that way its useful ) and other file formats u mentioned . I have also seen video podcasts from iTunes too ( refer previous 17th sept post ). But leaving all this why two players ( iTunes focussed to music and Quicktime focussed to movies ) in Mac? . Anyways why two players in Mac is not the real focus of this post . So no more discussion for now ;-) . maybe sometime later.

Yes you got what i am saying — “You can stretch the Quicktime player’s window to the width of the screen if you want to - you seem to be talking about the overlaid widget rather than the actual player”
I am worrying about the controller widget and not the whole Quicktime player as such in this post.

I can still use VLC and Real players ( i really do ) but why not use default player in Mac and complain about its usability sometimes. :-)

Man!! why the hell do you want the track bar having a Remote!!! Apple give you tools, use them!! hahaha

  6. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

I lost my remote for time being.. ;-)

  7. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

oh man… you should get a new remote on the apple store… is one of my favorite gadgets!!

  8. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

Good idea but i am not fond of that Apple remote.

  9. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

seriously? i had been years wishing to have that kind of remote on windows xp… finally i switched to mac and i’m the happiest man in the world… i only need to connect my MBP to the TV and the stereo and use the remote to watch films/dramas as if i would be in the cinema controlling everything from my sofa!!… the remote is one of the best things ever invented!! haha… and is not only working on iTunes and QuickTime or VLC… with some programs on the market you can make the remote work with any program that you want and do any action that you wish… [ Applications: Sofa Control, Mira, Remote Buddy ]

  10. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

i only need to connect my MBP to the TV ??..

  11. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

Yes, never did that? man… you can buy a converter DVI-SuperVideo or whichever video mode cable you need in the Apple store that will make your Mac appear on TV in the AUX channel!! just plug and play ( like a video console )

I think you don’t like Mac so much because you have nobody to teach you what you can do with it… I had been a Windows User for life since Windows 3.1… I switched to Mac half a year ago and I’m the happiest man on earth! haha

MBP = MacBook Pro ( just in case )

  12. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

Same here I switched to Mac more than a year ago But still Use Windows. You honestly tell me have you totally gotten rid of Windows.

I think of Mac as a good “Toy” and not as a good Computing tool. ha ha .. ;-) . A good toy lets you do this kind of stuff like connect to TV and to add more fun they give you remote and make some people happy. ;-) .
In my office i still use Windows for Work. only at home most of the times i use Mac ( sometimes i use windows too ) because it looks good superficially .

  13. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

Well, I’m a computer engineer. UI Engineer and Web Developer/Designer to be exact, and my MBP is perfect for all tasks… is not just a toy as you said, maybe you just use it for playing ( or maybe you have totally no knowledge of Computer Science )… and yes, i totally got rid of Windows ( only use it to make sure my websites/web-applications are viewed correctly both in Apple browsers ( safari, firefox ) and Windows browsers ( safari, firefox, ie6/7, chrome ).

also, i can’t think of any program in Windows that has no equivalent on Mac ( well… maybe Visual Studio.net but we don’t code Windows applications… so don’t need it )… We have perfect solutions for office work ( even the Microsoft Office if you like ), perfect tools for design ( Adobe CS4 ), all kind of coding software ( Coda [ my favorite ], X-Code, TextMate, etc… ), FTP clients, Remote desktops, Sub-versions tools, Image browsers, multimedia players, internet browsers, communication clients ( Skype, MSN, adium… ), Spaces and Expose ( those 2 help me a lot for web developer… 1 desktop with Coda, 1 desktop 1 Transmit [FTP cilent], 1 desktop with Photoshop and 1 desktop with FireFox )… and a million more applications.

i recommend you to take a look at http://osx.iusethis.com and take a look at all the wonderful mac applications we have :P

by the way… what can you do with a Windows that can’t be done in Mac?? oh!! yes!! catching a virus and having to force-restart your computer after a BSOD ( Blue Screen Of Death )

  14. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

Well i am an electronics engineer and now work in IT. i remember i used to do electronics project in my college days connecting from PC’s port to my hardwares in that way i coded in VB it was easier . I haven’t tried such in Mac but i dont hear people doing such stuff in Mac.

I use the site you have mentioned.

BSOD .. well there is one in Mac also but yes color is Black instead of blue and i have seen it in my Mac as well more frequently i used to see BSOD in my Windows XP. i saw BSOD in win 98 but i never saw BSOD in my Windows XP office machine ( office PCs are well maintained in every ways ).

Where is google talk for Mac where is chrome. there are lots of such examples.

  15. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

Google talk is no need, Mac OS X has iChat ( that works with gmail accounts ), that’s way google didn’t released it for Mac ( waste of time ). About Chrome, is coming, they are developing it. I must say that Google is more Apple-Friendly than Microsoft ( had you notice google maps, etc… are included on the iPhone? but not on windows mobile )… and the Google Notifier in Mac has much more options than Gmail Notifier in Windows ( that is only able to check if there are mails )… Maybe Google is doing Chrome much better and effective than the Microsoft version and that’s why is taking longer :P

but anyway the 2 examples you said are totally useless… as Google Talk can be replaced by Skype, iChat, MSN, Adium, etc… and Chrome can be replaced by Safari, FireFox, Opera, etc… so is not something you can do on Windows that you can’t do on Mac.

And about electronics development… i don’t know how to code them because is not my expertise ( i’m software/web developer not hardware )… but Apple has devices that got connected to its ports, right? i’m sure you can code your electronic gadgets same way they code their ones :P only need to search for it and you will find it.

About the black screen you say… I never see that and you are the first one i ever heard talking about it… so you might be doing something really wrong or your Mac has some factory defect… use some tool to verify your hardware is ok.

  16. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

I must be doing something wrong .. and about BSOD in windows those who got it didn’t do anything wrong in their windows?

I mentioned Google Talk because i do video/audio chat in windows using it u cant do such thing through Adium or iChat with your google talk friend can you?

  17. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

i do video chat ( in much better resolution ) with Skype and iChat ( yes, with google talk friends too )… don’t see the problem

  18. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

Video chat in Skype is fine but with iChat client i dont think we can do a video/audio chat to a friend using google talk in windows at other side.. can you do a video/audio chat with google talk friend using Windows other side.?
    see this .. http://robrohan.com/2007/11/30/trying-to-video-chat-between-mac-and-windows/

  19. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

well, don’t know if the other person was running Mac or PC… only need to try

  20. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

ok, found out why there is no Google Talk for Mac… reason is that google wants to switch it to a web application, so Google Talk won’t be required anymore. Happy now?

    http://blogs.computerworld.com/google_talk_video_for_mac_is_a_web_app

  21. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

hehehe. Google has already released Audio/Video for Gmail but it requires some plugin to install for the browser .

A standalone application would be also great..

So you using Windows XP today ;-)

  22. Rohman TAIWAN Says:

the thing is that google doesn’t seem to want standalone applications ( even there is an Adobe AIR widget for that function ), they prefer web-applications from now on.

Before i was writing from work not from home. the company I work at is all build on windows PCs, so I have no choice… have to use Windows there. But at home you won’t see me touching a Windows ( if is not for testing how my websites look on them )
