I was inspecting the total size consumed by Applications in my Mac using Disk Inventory . I came to know that Mail app is actually taking lot of space in the Hard Drive as compared to my usual Mail applications in Windows platform. Precisely Apple default Mail application is approx 290MB in size . I inspected inside the Mail app to know what exactly is it thats taking so much of space and knew that there are some unused localization folders ( i guess language specific folders ) . I realised that i am only going to use English as language in my Mac so i thought i could delete all other Language specific folders except “English.lproj” . After deleting all those i saw no difference in the Mail app , theoretically which is as expected . Now my Mail.app size is just 27 MB and have faced no Problem and assume i wont get any problem as long as my Mac language is set to English. To summarize the tip Continue reading »

The other day i downloaded XCode from Apple site to have some experience of Apple development . And also the iPhone Development kit . After i downloaded the software it asked me to update my OS to latest version from Software Update tool before i can install the downloaded Software kit . It was irritating to know that . I dont find any reason why i should be having latest OS X version . Though I have 10.5.3 version of OS X . Latest one is 10.5.4 . I did not want to update my OS version . Rather i found a cool fast trick to get the Mac OS X version to any number i wanted . Now i have Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.5 before apple has seeded this version . Continue reading »

I have been using Virtual CD/DVD mount tool like Alcohol , Daemon Tools in my windows machine to mount any CD/DVD disk image especially for games play. But in mac i couldn’t find such Virtual drive creator tool . In Fact in mac disk mounting can be done from Mac’s ( OS X ) inbuilt disk utility . The disk utility mounts files like .iso but today i came across a file which needed disk mounting . The file name was .bin and the associated file to mount was having .cue extension . The file actually is from VTC online tutorial series CD . Finally i managed to mount the .cue file and read the content inside .bin file with the help of Toast Titanium software in Mac . Below is the video showing how i did that.

I was wondering at my Mac Dock. There were some Shiny dots at the bottom of some of the applications. I didn’t have any clue what they meant . I played around for sometime and later realised that the shiny dots were there only at the bottom of Application icon which were open . Basically the Applications wth shiny dots were running at that moment .
So this forms a new tip ( does everyone know it ? , i didn’t know it because i have macphobia ) - Shiny dots at the bottom of Application icon at Dock indicate that the particular Application is running ( foreground or background ).
In windows its pretty simple to know which appilcations are running by simply looking at the Windows task bar mostly. Or there can be background running programs in windows which lie in System Tray . Some other programs can be found at Windows Task Manager window .
